Musicians without Borders

"If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music." •• Jimi Hendrix

Musicians Without Borders uses the power of music to bridge divides, connect communities, and heal the wounds of war.

Our long-term commitment allows our participants the time to develop skills and talents, process grief and loss, and build bridges of reconciliation in societies divided by recent or ongoing conflict. Our professional trainers are specialized in running community music projects with people dealing with trauma, fear and isolation as a result of war and conflict.

We work closely with local musicians and organizations to build sustainable projects in response to local needs. From successful projects we develop models, methodologies and trainings to adapt for other regions.

Musicians without Borders is building a global network of musicians and music lovers who support our work with their time, energy, expertise and financial donations.

Why Music?

"You may be poor, you may only have a ramshackle house, you may have lost your job, but that song gives you hope." •• Nelson Mandela

Where war has raged, people need everything to return to life: food, water, shelter, clothing, medicine. But more than anything, people need hope. To reconcile, people need empathy. To heal, people need connection and community.

I’ll admit – I feel like this post could get me in trouble. I’m feeling fairly cheeky – maybe due to lack of sleep and the crazy travel schedule I have created for myself. Oh quick PS – the client has authorized me to write the following example as a learning opportunity for everyone else.

About a month ago, Tim Sackett (one of my favorite HR pro bloggers…) wrote a blog called Hire Beautiful People . I laughed as I typically do, pondered the logic, agreed with it (he’s my favorite for a reason) and went on with my day.

Last week my client had a lawsuit land on his desk – 4 employees were suing for discrimination based on internal inequity of compensation. There were 2 females and 2 males. All were white. All were over 27 but under 40. What’s left to discriminate them on? The answer: They were alleging that because they were overweight they were paid at least 11% less than their lighter colleagues. One also alleged that they were not given a role because it was client facing.

I’ll admit, my first thought was, “Are you f’ing kidding me? Who has time for this?” But after some digging, I did see a unique correlation. While they had the most seniority, their increases weren’t in alignment with most of their colleagues and none of them were promoted to the same degree as their colleagues (if at all).

I dug a little deeper and looked at their performance reviews from the last 4 quarters. All of them had clear objectives and in most cases, they were not hitting those objectives (which they had ALL agreed to and signed). This was a logical reason not to get an increase or a promotion. But here’s where I started to doubt myself: What if because they were overweight, they didn’t get attention or support from their manager (subconsciously) and that’s why they weren’t hitting their objectives? It’s opposite of the hockey coach who sees the 5’6″, 140 lb, 9 year old boy, who isn’t a fast skater today, but the possibilities are endless tomorrow. Guess who the coach starts to spend all their attention on? This has Malcolm Gladwell all over it.

Key learning for managers: Make sure you document, document, document. As it relates to the lawsuit above, there are a lot more details than I am willing to get into, but I’m fairly confident that we are getting out of this primarily due to the awesomeness of the documentation. (Proud tear rolling down my cheek – a client that took the training I provided, followed through and implemented!)

Key learning for managers:

Coincidentally on February 27th, BLR events will be doing a webinar on how to get ready and protect your business from “beauty biased discrimination”. This means it’s an actual thing. This scares me a little – as a recruiter – I judge people every day. Could I be sued? The answer is absolutely.

That said, I will stand by my judgements (or “discriminations” if you will). I feel my job is to select people who have the right technical skills but also the right brand. Not only will the individual be a reflection or extension of the company I place them at, but they are also an extension of Elevated. I’m not saying I’m looking to hire only good-looking people – but I am saying I want you to care about what you look like when you show up in my office for an interview.
